How Direx Engine works, and how to set it up.
Getting started
Download the installer for macOS, Windows, or Linux and run it. On first launch, sign in or create a free account, then connect a storage location, a local folder, a network drive, or OneDrive.
Connecting storage
Local folders and network drives (NAS): point Direx Engine at any folder on your machine or a mounted network share. No special setup, it reads the folder the same way Finder or File Explorer would.
Microsoft OneDrive: connect through Microsoft's own sign-in.
Direx Engine requests the Files.Read scope, read
only. It can list and read your files to build a search index, but
can't create, edit, rename, or delete anything in your OneDrive.
Google Drive support is built but not turned on yet while we finish Google's verification process. It'll show up as an option once it's live.
You can disconnect any storage location at any time from inside the app. Disconnecting removes it from your index; it doesn't touch the actual files.
How indexing works
Once a storage location is connected, Direx Engine reads what's there in the background and builds a search index, entirely on your own machine. For supported file types, it also extracts real content, not just the filename, things like part numbers, materials, and revisions from CAD files, so you can search by what a file actually is.
Every save is tracked automatically as version history, with no manual check-in or check-out step. Opening a file from search opens it right where it actually lives (on disk, on the network drive, or in OneDrive's own web view), Direx Engine never copies files into some separate managed folder.
Searching
Type into the search bar to match across every connected source at once. Filter results by source (local, NAS, OneDrive) or file type (CAD, documents, spreadsheets, images, PDFs) from the sidebar.
Where your data lives
The index, extracted metadata, and any file previews are all built and stored locally, on your own machine. Nothing about your files, their names, or their content is uploaded to our servers. A second device you install Direx Engine on starts with an empty index, it has no knowledge of what's indexed elsewhere. The only things that touch our server are your account (email, login) and, if you choose to post one, a community feedback suggestion. Full detail in the Privacy Policy.
Account and billing
Direx Engine is free to use during early access. Manage your account from inside the app, or delete it entirely at any time, which also removes your account data from our server.
Reporting a bug or requesting a feature
Post it on the community board from inside the app. Other users can upvote suggestions, and it's the best way to tell us what to build next.
Uninstalling
macOS: drag the app from Applications to the Trash. Windows: use
the uninstaller entry it adds to Settings → Apps, or run the
installer again and choose uninstall. Linux: delete the
.AppImage file. Uninstalling removes the app and its
local index; it never touches the original files it indexed.
System requirements
macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel), Windows, or Linux (x64 or arm64). No separate server or database to run, everything the app needs is bundled with the installer.
